Repair or replace your boiler?
Your boiler has broken down, or keeps breaking down. Is it time for a new one? This page sets out what official sources and Checkatrade say. We read every source on 30 September 2026.
Our interest, stated plainly: this site is a free quote-matching service for new boiler installations only. With your consent we pass your enquiry to one Gas Safe registered boiler installer. We do not repair or fit boilers, and we do not pass on repair enquiries. So we gain only if you replace. Weigh what follows with that in mind.
First: is it safe?
The HSE says it is illegal to use a gas appliance you suspect is unsafe. Turn it off until a Gas Safe engineer has checked it [S3]. Repair or replacement, the work must be done by someone who is Gas Safe registered and competent for that type of work [S3].

Age, breakdowns and running costs
Checkatrade says replacing is often worth it when a boiler is around 10 to 15 years old, breaks down more often, or costs more to run [S1]. None of these is a rule. A Gas Safe engineer who has looked at your boiler can tell you what the fault is and what fixing it involves.
Why newer boilers are more efficient
The Energy Saving Trust says modern condensing boilers reuse heat that would otherwise escape up the flue, so they are more efficient than older boilers [S2]. The Planning Portal says that if you replace a gas boiler, the new one will probably have to be a condensing boiler, unless there is a good reason it cannot be [S5].
Thinking about a heat pump later?
The Energy Saving Trust says most heat pumps work with a hot water cylinder. If you switch to a combi now, you may need to fit a cylinder again later to get a heat pump [S2]. It also expects most UK homes to replace fossil fuel boilers with renewable alternatives in time [S2]. That is its view, not a legal date.
Servicing
The HSE strongly advises a yearly service by a Gas Safe engineer for gas appliances, flues and pipework [S3]. For owner-occupiers this is advice, not a legal duty [S3].
Help with the cost
- Energy Company Obligation. gov.uk says energy suppliers can help with "replacing or repairing your boiler" if you are on certain benefits in private housing, or live in social housing, and your home meets an EPC rating rule [S6]. Ofgem says the current phase, ECO4, "will run until 31 December 2026" [S7]. Ask your energy supplier whether it is still taking applications.
- Boiler Upgrade Scheme. It does not fund a new gas boiler. It is for replacing fossil fuel heating with a heat pump or a biomass boiler [S8].
